In March 2020, when the first lockdown was announced in India, in a bid to control COVID-19, the count was still in hundreds. But, everyone knew that it will increase rapidly. By May 19, 2020, more than one lakh Indians had contacted the disease.

In March itself, we had anticipated that the frontline health workers – doctors, nurses, medical practitioners and even police and sanitation workers – urgently need to be equipped with protective equipment like masks, gowns, sanitizers, etc. to prevent them getting exposed to this highly infectious and communicable virus.

In such times, a healthcare worker without protective equipment is like a soldier without an armour.

Keeping this in mind, we started a fundraiser with an initial target of ₹50 lakh. Within a short span of time, generous donors from all walks of life contributed more than the initial target and we managed to collect more than ₹65 lakh.

By April 28, 2020, protection equipment – 2000 PPE coveralls, 400 reusable gowns, 700 Masks, 720 bottles (500ml each) & 5000 bottles (100 ML each) of sanitizer, Inline suctions for ventilators, 440 goggles, 10 Pulse oximeters, 1100 face shields – worth almost ₹31 lakh was provided to PGIMER, Govt Medical College Hospital-32 and Govt Hospital-16. We also helped in upgrading ICUs with devices in GMCH-32, PGIMER & GMSH-16.

Then, on May 15, 2020, we provided the Rotary Blood Bank, Sector 37, Chandigarh with 50 reusable suits, 50 gowns, 100 reusable masks, 100 reusable caps, 50 liters sanitizer, 50 face shields and two infrared thermometers.

On June 18, 2020, we handed over to Chandigarh Health Department 40,000 three-layered masks, 500 Boxes of 100 gloves each, 500 liters of sanitizer, 100 Gowns, & 300 PPE Kits.

On July 2, 2020, we handed over 250 disposable gowns to APC, PGIMER.

On July 6, 2020, we handed over to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation 500 litres of sanitizer cans, 5000 bottles of 100 ml santizers, 1000 face shields and 300 PPE coveralls.

On July 21, 2020, we installed two automatic sanitizer dispensers at APC, PGIMER. Ten more were installed on July 30, 2020.

On July 30, 2020, we handed over 1000 N-95 masks and 1000 PPE coveralls to Sh Balbir Singh Sidhu, Health Minister Punjab. These were then received in stock by Dr Manjit Singh, Civil Surgeon Mohali.

On July 31, 2020, fifty thousand latex gloves were handed over to the Department of Internal Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

On August 10, 2020, twelve additional sanitizer dispensers were installed at PGIMER, Chandigarh – ten in pediatrics department and two in main Emergency.

On August 18, 2020, three sanitizer dispensers were installed in Infectious diseases ward of PGIMER, Chandigarh.

In between, we also provided some protective kits to Chandigarh Police and Mohali Municipal authorities.

What has been achieved thus far is just the tip of an iceberg. The fight is long drawn and continuing support of all is required to defeat this pandemic.
